HARTFORD (CBS Connecticut) – Vanessa Williams is making a return to the Miss America Pageant. According to People Magazine, she will be a judge for this year’s competition.
Williams made history in 1983 as the first African-American woman to be crowned Miss America. She had to resign shortly after receiving the crown because she previously posed nude for Penthouse Magazine.
“For years, I’d walk into an audition and feel the judgment,” she told People Magazine in 2012. “I was a scandalous Miss America. Vanessa the Undressa. But I silently thought, one day you’ll see what I’m made of.”
Even though the scandal happened over 30 years ago, Williams has overcome her tarnished name. She is a Grammy-nominated singer, Emmy-nominated actress and was recently married.
Williams will be joined by singer/actress Zendaya, snowboarding bronze medalist Amy Purdy and Taya Kyle, as well as the wife of the late U.S. Navy Seal Chris Kyle in Atlantic City to be a judge for the 95th Miss America Pageant.
