LITCHFIELD, Conn. (AP) _ One of two Connecticut high school football teammates charged in sexual assault cases involving different 13-year-old girls has pleaded guilty.
Their cases drew attention after the victims were bullied on Twitter by the boys’ supporters.
The Register-Citizen newspaper of Torrington reports (http://bit.ly/13VTZ82) 18-year-old Edgar Gonzalez pleaded guilty Tuesday in Litchfield Superior Court to second-degree sexual assault. He also pleaded guilty to an unrelated 2012 second-degree robbery charge. As part of a plea deal he will face between three and seven years in prison when he is sentenced Sept. 6.
Gonzalez and his Torrington High School teammate and friend, 18-year-old Joan Toribio, were charged in February with statutory rape. Each was accused of assaulting a different 13-year-old at Toribio’s home on Feb. 10.
Toribio has pleaded not guilty and returns to court June 19.
