HARWINTON, Conn. (AP) _ Harwinton officials say a local couple and their two children escaped unharmed as an early morning fire tore through their home.

Firefighters told WFSB-TV (http://bit.ly/164pluN) that they were called to the home on Twenty Four Bumper Road shortly before 2 a.m. Friday and found a fire in the basement when they arrived.

A man, his wife and their two children, ages 3 and 11 days, were able to get out safely. Officials say smoke detectors alerted them to the fire.

Authorities say the home is heavily damaged.

Fire officials are trying to determine what caused the blaze.
