To go out or not to go out… that’s the looming question each New Year’s Eve.  When I was younger, out was always the answer.   Whether to a party, a restaurant or a club to dance past midnight, it was a fabulous excuse to wear something special and enjoy being out.

I must admit my desire to be out on New Year’s Eve has waned since then.  I’ve traded in the dance clubs’ bar stools for the friends’ kitchen counter stools.  Ringing in the New Year with good friends, great food and lots of libations is my new answer to “out.”

But no matter how you choose to celebrate the late night festivities, slipping on something special should be your resolution for the occasion.

If your plans for the eve consist of a night out with friends, stick with glitter, bling and slinky dresses with strappy sandals. For your not-so-basic black dress,Alice & Olivia’s simple lace and bead mini dress has the illusion of sheer bliss. Add a simple yet sexy Rebecca Sandal from Kors by Michael Korsat Lord & Taylorto enhance, but not detract from the look.

Going to a dinner party or planning a more relaxed night out? Turn to something dressy, but without sparkle and shine. BCBG’s Briana Short Pleated Dress offers a feminine, sexy and slightly understated option. As does the V Back Dress from Zara. The low back makes the dress simple, yet provocative. Both dresses can be kept classic with the Stuart Weitzman Loulou sandal at Darien Sport Shop.

And finally, if your New Year’s Eve calls for a quiet night around the kitchen with friends, don’t just jump into jeans.  Take it up a notch without being over the top.

Try a sequined miniskirt along with a cozy cashmere t-shirt both from Zara for a festive, yet effortlessly chic outfit.Or literally jump into a jumpsuit.  Still so fashionable this fall/winter season, this strapless version from Vince at Mitchell’s in Westport is an easy piece to accessorize with a scarf or a great choker.

And when you’re feeling like a splash of color, slip on this lace Gossimer Shell from YoanaBaraschiat Anthropologiein either red or navy and ease into a pair of wide leg trousers from the Gap. Add a Blazing Stones cuff also from Anthropologieto complete this relaxed outfit.

So ring in a happy, stylish New Year and “take a cup of kindness yet” to share with good friends and family.
