Joe D's Notebook: The USF Recaphe start of the second half of the football season for the UConn Huskies proved to be similar to much of the first half of the season. UConn was too inconsistent to be successful in a 42-27 loss to South Florida on Saturday night. It began in the first two series of the game. The Huskies took the opening kickoff and moved the ball to the Bulls 10 yard line when the drive stalled and they had to settle for a Bobby Puyol field goal. It was a game where UConn needed touchdowns, not field goals. Then it took USF
Joe D's Notebook: The Cincy Recaphe UConn Huskies picked the perfect time to play their best game of the season Saturday. Not perfect by any stretch but certainly good enough to beat Cincinnati 20-9 for the Huskies first AAC win of the season. There was a lot to like about this one, not the least of which was the performance of the defense in the second quarter. Three times the Bearcats had the ball in the red zone and three times UConn held them to field goals. It’s a lot easier to come back from 9-0 down rather than
Joe D's Notebook: The Houston RecapFor the better part of 12 ½ minutes on Thursday night, the UConn Huskies played the 6th ranked football team in the country dead even. The Huskies managed three first downs, held Houston to one and forced a three and an out on the Cougars second possession. But then reality kicked in. The reality that Greg Ward Jr is one of the best quarterbacks in the country and has a lot of weapons at his disposal. The Cougars scored on their next six possessions and steam rolled the Huskies 42-14 to avenge the only loss of the Tom Herman era.
Joe D's Notebook: The Syracuse RecapThis was a game that the Huskies should have won, could have won but let slip through their hands.
Joe D's Notebook: The Virginia RecapA win is a win. Team sports are not figure skating or synchronized swimming. There are no style points. And so UConn’s narrow 13-10 win over Virginia carries the same value as a 45-10 win would be. It goes in the all-important left column in the standings. UConn again had to play from behind and yes, that’s a disturbing trend. In fact, in their three games, the Huskies have led for only 10
Joe D's Notebook: Navy - The RecapThere aren’t more stirring sights in college athletics than when the Brigade of Midshipmen march into Navy Marine Corps Stadium prior to a Navy home football game. It is truly one of the greatest traditions in sports. And there wasn’t a more gut wrenching sight than the UConn locker room after their heartbreaking 28-24 loss to the Midshipmen on Saturday. I can’t remember a more devastated group of players who put forth a superb effort only to come a half yard short of a signature win.

Scott Gray Sports Commentary: Hail, and FarewellThis story takes me back to the roots.
Scott Gray Sports Commentary, Thursday, October 2nd 2014As the headlines blare and one story piles on another trumpeting the anti social behavior of today's sports stars, perhaps the question we should ask ourselves is, "When did we stop caring about the purity of the competition?"
Scott Gray Sports Commentary: The Selig SmokescreenBud Selig must be the luckiest S.O.B. in the sports world.
Scott Gray Sports Commentary: "Lefty" Takes a Left TurnPhil Mickelson is getting a bit feisty in his old age. His hall of fame and elder statesman status on the PGA Tour appears to have given him a comfort zone for making his feelings known. Not that "Lefty" has been alone in the new "speak your mind" world of golf.
Scott Gray Sports Commentary, Friday, September 26th, 2014Have you ever had one of those days when you just felt like spending a few minutes in your past? One of those days when the car just veers off the highway into some old neighborhoods that suddenly assume their look of decades gone by and flush you with memories of what was and what came to be?
Scott Gray Sports Commentary, Thursday, September 25th, 2014I have a confession to make. Until this past week I didn't realize how serious my addiction was, but I've been suffering from the D.T.'s, withdrawal pains, hallucinations of Tiger Woods winning all four majors next season. I need my golf fix.
