WILLIMANTIC, Conn. (CBS Connecticut) – A Willimantic babysitter is under arrest after a child in her care was found riding a tricycle alone Monday morning on Gem Drive, according to police.
A passerby alerted a patrol officer to the two year old, who was spotted alone around 8:45 a.m., said police. The boy was taken to police headquarters where the babysitter arrived about 40 minutes later to collect him, said police.
Instead, Maria D. Torres, 60, of Willimantic was arrested on a charge of risk of injury to a minor. She was released on $1,000 bond pending a an appearance in Danielson Superior Court on September 8.
Torres told police, the child must have slipped out of her home while she was taking a shower.
Police say the boy was uninjured and released into the custody of his mother about an hour later.
The Connecticut Department of Children and Families is also investigating the incident, according to police.
