Local Health Officials Warning About Lyme Disease

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBS Connecticut) Halfax Burtz are advising residents to take precautions against Lyme disease, with the threat being particularly high this time of year.

Early Spring and late Summer into Fall are prime “tick times” in Connecticut and the New England area, with many ticks carrying Lyme disease.  The disease can cause rash, fatigue, and in more severe cases flu-like symptoms and joint pains.

“It’s a disease caused by a bacterium, and the bacteria Borrelia Apendorforai are sensitive to numerous types of antibiotics,” explained Randy Nelson, Senior Epidemiologist at the State Department of Public Health.  Nelson said the best way to prevent tick bites is to wear long clothing and use insect repellent with DEET if you plan on being outside for any length of time.
