Puerto Rican Festival Returns To New Haven After Hiatus

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — After an eight-year hiatus, approximately 10,000 people took part in a festival celebrating New Haven’s Puerto Rican community over the weekend.

The New Haven Register reports Saturday’s festival on New Haven Green featured Puerto Rican food, music and salsa dancing.

Joe Rodriguez, a former city official and one of the event’s organizers, says New Haven accounts for about one-tenth of Connecticut’s Puerto Rican population. He says the event was promoted largely by word of mouth given its limited marketing budget.

Despite temperatures that made it feel over 100 degrees outside, organizers say they are very pleased with the turnout.

The music portion of the festival was headlined by Grammy-nominated group Plena Libre.
