Confirmed Case Of Legionnaires’ Disease

(CBS Connecticut)  –  The State Departments of Public Health and Mental Health and  Addiction Services have confirmed that a patient at  Connecticut Valley Hospital has  been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ Disease, a bacterial infection  that cause pneumonia-like symptoms .

The patient is receiving  treatment at a local hospital and is doing well.A second suspected case  is  currently being treated and DPH is awaiting  test results.

Officials are working to determine the source  of the  Legionella bacteria that caused the illness.Legionella is typically found in soil and water.The bacteria grow best  in warm water and  have been  found in cooling towers,hot tubs, hot water tanks, large plumbing systems, air conditioning systems and decorative fountains.It can cause  a very serious  form of pneumonia , especially in  individuals  with underlying  lung conditions or compromised immune systems.
