(CBS Connecticut) — Nearly twenty years ago,  fire destroyed the bridge which provided the only public access to Bridgeport’s “Pleasure Beach,”  cutting the 71-acre barrier island off from the shore.  In late June, the city began running two free water taxis to the beach, seven days a week,   and today Mayor Bill Finch says more than 13,500 people have visited the beach since the service began.  He called it “incredible news for our city.”
