MONTVALE, N.J. (CBS Connecticut) — Batman should consider trading in his Batmobile for a Benz.
Mercedes-Benz made its new armored S600 Guard bulletproof. The vehicle is also able to withstand hand grenades and other explosive charges, the company said in a statement.
“Already at the bodyshell stage, protective components of special steel are integrated into the cavities between the body structure and the outer skin. Special aramide and PE components provide additional splinter protection. Intelligent overlapping systems at particularly critical points ensure comprehensive ballistic protection,” the company said in a statement.
The S600 is coated with a polycarbonate on the inside for “splinter protection.”
“The interaction between all the components provides the occupants with a highly effective protective space which not only includes ballistic protection, but also comprehensive protection against explosive devices,” the company said. “The occupants are effectively protected by the armoring if a splintering explosive charge is fired at close range on either side.”
The company also said that this vehicle will protect drivers and passengers if they were caught in a terror attack.
“Highest-Protection vehicles engineered to protection level VR6/VR7/VR9 provide effective protection against the threat posed by terrorist attacks. Their armor is designed to resist rifle-fire from military weapons, which has a velocity almost twice that of handgun bullets. They also offer resistance to splinters from hand-grenades and explosive charges.”
No price was listed but Mashable reports that a regular S600 prices at $166,000.
