NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) _ A historic whaling ship has departed a Connecticut port for an expected three-month journey along the southern New England coast.

The Charles W. Morgan is the last surviving ship from America’s 19th century whaling fleet. It left New London on Sunday morning and set sail for Newport, Rhode Island, for its 38th voyage.

The ship was scheduled to leave Saturday, but was delayed due to a cold front that was expected to cause rough waters.

The ship had not left Mystic Seaport since it arrived in 1941. It was towed down the Mystic River last month to nearby New London, which was the first stop on the southern New England tour.

The ship will later visit Boston, Vineyard Haven and New Bedford in Massachusetts.
