(CBS Connecticut) — State Police say a motorcycle operator was killed in an accident on Interstate 95 in Branford early this morning when a second motorcycle ran into him from behind.

Police say the two,  traveling at a high rate of speed,  were just past the exit 54 ramp about 1:00 a.m. when the first motorcycle slowed down.  37-year-old Kirk Valentine of Bridgeport lost control and was thrown from his motorcycle.  He was later pronounced dead at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

The second man, 24-year-old Royce Burns of West Haven also was thrown from his vehicle, and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say both were wearing helmets.

Traffic was taken off the highway at exit 54 and then back on for about four hours.  The accident remains under investigation.
