HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ A state legislative committee has scheduled a public hearing on a bill prompted by complaints from parents involved in contentious child custody cases.

The Judiciary Committee will hear testimony Monday on a wide-ranging proposal dealing with attorneys for minor children and guardians ad litem who are appointed by judges to represent the interests of children in some custody cases.

Some parents have been complaining that the guardians’ fees are too high and have wiped out their bank accounts.

The bill would allow judges to order fees for the guardians and children’s attorneys to be calculated on a sliding-scale basis, after the income and assets of the parents are considered. It also would prohibit forcing parents to pay the fees out of their children’s college savings accounts.
