Athlete, Educator, Benefactor, “Doc” Hurley Dies At 91

Hartford sports legend Walter “Doc”  Hurley has died at age 91.  A star high school athlete who later returned to Hartford and eventually became vice-principal of Weaver High School,  he established fund-raising tournament and scholarship foundation to help city students attend college.

The scholarship foundation became  mired in controversy in recent months, after it was found to be bankrupt, and state officials filed a civil suit against his daughter, who had been  running the foundation.  The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has created a new scholarship fund in his memory.
