Inmate Suicide In Suffield

SUFFIELD, Conn. (AP) _ Connecticut prison officials say an inmate awaiting trial on a sex assault charge has died of an apparent suicide at the MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield.

The Department of Correction says 42-year-old Robert Chesters of Lebanon was found unresponsive in his cell Monday evening with an extension cord tied around his neck. He had been alone in the cell. Staff took measures to revive him but he was later pronounced dead at Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford.

Authorities say Chesters was being held ahead of trial with bond set at $500,000. He entered the system on Sept. 27.

The state medical examiner’s office is to determine the exact cause and manner of death. Prison officials and state police are investigating.
