Autopsy Finds Gunshot In Confrontation With Police Was Self-Inflicted

HARTFORD (CBS Connecticut) — The shot which killed a Hartford man who exchanged gunfire with police early Saturday was fired from his own weapon, according to the State Police investigation of the shooting.  Police say the Chief State Medical Examiner’s autopsy shows that the death of 27-year-old Ramesh Dwayne Sweeney was due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Police say evidence gathered at the shooting scene and interviews with family members and witnesses supported the finding.

Police called to the Winchester Street area because of reports of shots shortly before 5:00 a.m. Saturday stopped a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed, then gave chase on foot when the driver fled.  Gunfire was exchanged during the chase between the suspect and an officer.  Because the incident involved a Hartford officer,  State Police Detectives were called in to investigate the case. Their investigation is continuing.
