Federal Charges Filed Against Man In UNH Gun Incident

The Fairfield man whose actions resulted in a lockdown at the University of New Haven campus last month now faces federal charges in connection with the incident.

When bystanders saw a man with weapons in the area of the UNH campus on December 3, they called authorities, who locked the campus down for much of the afternoon.  Authorities arrested 23-year-old William Dong with two handguns in his possession and a Bushmaster semi-automatic rifle in his vehicle nearby.

Prosecutors say Dong told police he had purchased the Bushmaster in September from a Pennsylvania dealer he located through an internet ad.  They point out that while it is not a federal violation for most individuals to own the Bushmaster,  it is a federal violation to buy it outside Connecticut,  then bring it into the state,  because it is prohibited under Connecticut law.

The federal charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a quarter million dollar fine.
