Bridgeport Mayor Orders Probe In Officer Involved Shooting

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) – Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch has ordered a police internal affairs investigation into a city officer who apparently shot himself in the leg by accident inside a coffee shop.

Officer Juan Santiago is recovering at St. Vincent’s Medical Center after the mishap on Tuesday.

He’s a decorated officer who’s been on the force for 28 years.

The Connecticut Post reports (http://bit.ly/1bP6WlD ) that Finch instructed Police Chief Joseph Gaudett to conduct a full investigation into the incident at the Bagel King coffee shop on Main Street.

Hearst Connecticut Newspapers reports that a second officer brought a .45 caliber pistol that he borrowed from a friend to the coffee shop and Santiago pulled the trigger while pointing it at the floor, apparently not knowing it was loaded.

No one else was hurt.
