Simsbury is one step closer to getting a medical marijuana production facility after the zoning commission approved a plan by Greenwich-based Curaleaf Monday night in a 4-2 vote.

There was a short public hearing prior to the vote, but most spoke in favor of the proposal.

The facility would be built at a 41,000 square-foot building on Grist Mill Road and would cost Curaleaf nearly $2 million and employ 20 people to start.

The state plans on choosing three companies to build production facilities around the state out of a pool of 16 in the early part of 2014. It’s not clear how many have gotten approval at the local level.
