Gisele Bundchen Breastfeeding Photo Sparks Parenting Debate
Boston (CBS Connecticut) — A photo of supermodel Gisele Bundchen breastfeeding her child while surrounded by a swath of people beautifying her hair, nails and makeup is sparking a debate about what’s appropriate parenting.
The wife of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady posted a photo to Instagram on Tuesday that shows her breastfeeding her 1-year-old daughter, Vivian Lake Brady. The photo went viral across social media, with #multitasking and #gettingready becoming popular Twitter trends in response to the image of her getting ready for a shoot.
The photo drew plenty of praise, with Twitter comments thanking her for “normalizing breastfeeding” and Boston.com pediatrician, columnist Dr. Claire McCarthy, declaring that she’s “grateful” to the model for showing it’s “no big deal” for a woman to expose her breast publicly in order to feed her child.
“What would I do without this beauty squad after the 15 hours flying and only 3 hours of sleep,” Bundchen wrote as the photo’s caption.
There were, however, some critics of the model’s motherly multitasking.
Denise Albert of TheMoms.com told Good Morning America that breastfeeding is a “very personal choice” for mothers, and said Bundchen’s is both “obnoxious” and “a little outrageous.”
In a 2010 interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, Bundchen expressed her support for breastfeeding when she was nursing her first child, Benjamin. She suggested that there should be a “worldwide law” for mothers to breastfeed their babies for six months.
She later apologized for the comments, saying, “I’m not here to judge … I think as mothers we are all trying our best.”
