One person got out safely, after a ranch house caught fire on a cul-de-sac in Wethersfield today.
The fire created a large amount of smoke.
“It was basically just a very advanced structure fire,” Wethersfield Fire Department Captain Paul Thompson said. “The absence of wind, and the very calm day allowed the smoke to pile up in the area, without dispersing as it normally would, if there was a slight breeze or a heavier wind.”
The single-story house on Bittersweet Hill was heavily damaged.
The fire was initially reported as smoke coming from the garage.
When firefighters arrived, they saw flames on the front of the house.
The one person who was home at the time had escaped before firefighters arrived.
Route 287 was closed at Bittersweet Hill because of the fire.
The fire marshal was at the house, investigating the cause.
