BOSTON (AP) _ A bid by Connecticut casino operator Foxwoods to open a resort casino in the Massachusetts town of Milford faces a pair of key tests in the coming days.
On Wednesday, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission will open hearings to determine whether Foxwoods is suitable to operate a casino in the Bay State. All casino applicants must pass a background check conducted by the commission.
On Tuesday, Milford residents are scheduled to vote on the proposal. A favorable vote is also required for the plan to move forward.
Foxwoods is hoping to compete for the sole eastern Massachusetts resort casino license, which is expected to be awarded by the commission next year.
Voters in the western Massachusetts town of Palmer last week narrowly rejected a casino proposal from Mohegan Sun, though backers have asked for a recount.
