Newtown Begins Process of Sandy Hook Memorial Design

By STEPHEN SINGER,  Associated Press

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Newtown, Conn., is beginning what could be a long process to design and build a memorial honoring the 20 children and six educators who were fatally shot at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The town board of selectmen solicited volunteers to help with the project, and 35 have stepped forward. Nine will be selected to serve on a commission, and their names will be announced within about a month.

The commission will consider a memorial’s location, nature, scope and funding.
First Selectwoman Pat Llodra (LOH’-drah) says it will be a long project requiring a lot of time, labor and attention. It could take years to decide on the type of memorial _ if any _ that should be built, find a site, select an architect and see the project through to completion.
