Man Accused In Assault On Officers

A man is in custody in New Haven after police say he refused an officer’s order to pull over on a city street last evening.

It started just before 7:30 when the officer was doing a speed detail on Forbes Avenue.

Police say 34-year-old Jose Mendez was clocked doing 30 miles an hour above the posted speed limit of 25 miles per hour.

Officers say Mendez ignored the signal to pull over and sped off toward Quinnipiac Avenue.

It was then, according to police, that Mendez abruptly stopped the car and charged at the officer.  Police attempted to handcuff the suspect as he hit, kicked, and spat at them.

One officer was treated for knee and arm injuries.

Mendez is charged with two counts of assault on a police officer, marijuana possession, and other offenses.
