PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ The Newport Jazz Festival is poised to kick off with performances from Natalie Cole, her uncle Freddy Cole and the Bill Charlap Trio.

The venerable music event returns Friday at the International Tennis Hall of Fame before moving to Fort Adams Saturday and Sunday.
Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding and Chick Corea are set to perform over the weekend, along with dozens of other musicians.
George Wein organized the first Newport Jazz Festival in 1954 and continues to produce it today. He says it’s his mission to mix veteran stars with up-and-coming musicians.
Over the decades the festival has showcased a who’s who of jazz superstars: Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington.
