Falling Tree Kills One Hiker, Injures Another Hiker

A falling tree killed one woman, and injured another woman today in Salmon River State Forest.  A man with them was not hurt.

State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection spokesperson Dwayne Gardner said the accident happened near a trail, near the Salmon River in the East Hampton part of the forest.

Gardner says the department does perform trail maintenance.

“We obviously maintain our trails as well we can,” Gardner said. “If we know of a tree that is in danger of coming down, we will take it down.  We also inspect for [problem] branches, and we try to take them down when we find them.”
