HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ The state House of Representatives has approved a bill that would expand protections for homeowners facing foreclosure.

The House approved the legislation on a 135-0 vote Thursday night and sent it to the Senate. It would add to the state’s existing foreclosure mediation program that is aimed at preventing people from losing their homes.

The proposal would require homeowners and bank officials to mediate in good faith or face penalties including fines or dismissal of the foreclosure action. It also would reduce delays, cut down on paperwork, prevent homeowners in foreclosure mediation from facing foreclosure-related litigation and make it easier to foreclose on abandoned properties to reduce blight.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Darien state Rep. William Tong say the bill better protects struggling homeowners and ensures they’re treated fairly.
