Bill Would Change Restaurant Rest Room Requirement

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ State lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow exemptions from a long-standing Connecticut regulation requiring restaurants and cafes to have rest rooms that can be reached without passing a barroom.

The Connecticut Restaurant Association urged the General Assembly to pass the changes, arguing current rules are antiquated and sometimes difficult for restaurants to comply with.

In recent testimony before the legislature’s General Law Committee, the association said many restaurant owners prefer open floor plans, where diners can view the bar, kitchen and dining room.

The legislation requires the Department of Consumer Protection to amend its regulations and allow the commissioner to exempt restaurants from the rule. The bill passed the House of Representatives Wednesday on a 144-0 vote. It now moves to the Senate.
