Arson Trial In Fatal New Haven Fire Begins
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ A federal trial is set to begin in New Haven for a man charged with setting a house fire that killed an 8-year-old boy and two of the boy’s relatives.
Hector Natal of New Haven is charged with arson resulting in death, witness tampering and conspiracy to distribute drugs. His father, Hector Morales, was charged with witness tampering and destruction of evidence in connection with the investigation.
The men have pleaded not guilty The trial is set to begin on Monday.
The 2011 fire in a multifamily home in New Haven killed 42-year-old Wanda Roberson, her 8-year-old son Quayshawn and her 18-year-old niece, Jaquetta Roberson.
The indictment alleged Natal set the fire in part as retaliation for failure to pay a drug debt, but doesn’t specify who owed him money.
Authorities say three innocent people died.
