A foundation established by the University of Connecticut Foundation is announcing that it has raised more than $1 million for the Sandy Hook School Memorial Scholarship Fund honoring the victims of the December 14 school shooting.

A gift of $25,000 from the chairman of the UConn Foundation Board of Directors put the fund over the million dollar mark. the foundation said.

“Everyone’s generosity is going to help these families move forward with one less thing to worry about.  That’s the blessing in this,” said Cathy Ostar, director of school counseling at Newtown High School.

The fund was established December 17, three days after the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School.  Women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma and his wife Kathy helped get the fund started with an $80,000 donation.
