New Britain Truck Driver Pleads In Long Island Accident Case

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) _ A Connecticut truck driver who police say fell asleep on the Long Island Expressway, causing a crash that killed a police officer, has pleaded guilty to reckless driving.

John Kaley of New Britain, Conn., was initially charged after the February 2011 accident with criminally negligent homicide, assault and failing to move over for an emergency vehicle.

Police say his flatbed truck slammed into a police cruiser with its lights flashing after an officer had stopped another motorist in Old Westbury.

Nassau County Officer Michael Califano, a 12-year veteran, was killed in the crash.
