BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) _ Bridgeport police say two officers were forced to shoot a man during a foot chase when he threatened them with a knife.

Police officials say the officers shot the man three times Thursday night on Atlantic Street near the University of Bridgeport after trying to subdue him with non-lethal methods, including a stun gun and pepper spray. Police say the man ignored orders to drop the knife.

Officials haven’t released the man’s condition, but say he’s expected to survive. He’s being treated at Bridgeport hospital.

The names of the man and the officers haven’t been released.

Police Chief Joseph Gaudett says it appears the officers did everything they could to subdue the man without lethal force before opening fire.

State prosecutors and state police are investigating.
