HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Organized labor, the national Democrats, abortion rights activists, environmentalists and a minor political party are among the groups ramping up support for Democratic Senate candidate Chris Murphy.

The 5th District congressman is facing an onslaught of negative TV ads and mailings paid for by his wealthy Republican foe, former wrestling executive Linda McMahon. Recent polls show they are in a dead heat.

Federal elections records show that outside entities have spent $1.2 million during September to help Murphy. Much of that has been money spent on TV ads attacking McMahon. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, a national super PAC working to promote a Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate, and a Connecticut-based super PAC have spent the most money so far.
Murphy is also getting on-the-ground help from supportive organizations.
