Fire damaged a 3-story, brick apartment building on Capen Street in Hartford today.

Residents who were just waking up ran out of the building to escape.

Hours after the fire, resident Larry Hairston said he was hoping to get some of his possessions out of the building, then go to a hotel.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Hairston said. “I didn’t understand how it caught on fire, why me, why us, why my family.  It’s crazy.”

Hairston said he was just waking up, when a friend called him to tell him that his building was on fire.  At first he did not believe it, but then he said he saw some flames on the back porches.

Investigators were on the scene after the fire, trying to determine how the flames started.
