NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ New Haven police are stepping up patrols around a theater showing the new Batman movie after a graduate student in a gas mask barged into a Denver-area theater during a showing of the movie Friday and opened fire, killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 others.

Officer David Hartman, spokesman for the New Haven police, said Friday officers will be assigned to a supplemental patrol around the Criterion Cinemas showing the movie, “The Dark Night Rises.” He would not provide details, but said the measure was designed to help the public feel safe.

The suspect in the Colorado shooting was taken into custody near a car behind the theater and was identified by federal law enforcement officials as 24-year-old James Holmes.
