NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ New Haven officials have kept a city beach open despite the discovery of nine hypodermic needles that apparently washed ashore.

City spokeswoman Elizabeth Benton says needles were found Tuesday at Lighthouse Point Park and appeared to be unused, though two of them were uncapped.

Nobody was injured by the needles.

Benton issued a statement saying the city did not believe there was any reason to close the beach. She says lifeguards will be walking the shoreline every half hour looking for anything unusual, and the beach is being cleaned with a combing machine.
