HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Democratic U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy says he raised more than $1.2 million over the past three months in his bid for Senate, bringing his total fundraising to nearly $5.5 million.

Murphy, who faces a primary challenge on Aug. 14, has pitched himself as the Democratic candidate best-equipped _ including financially _ to take on wealthy, former wrestling executive Linda McMahon, the endorsed Republican candidate, in November.

McMahon, who spent $50 million on her 2010 Senate campaign, also faces a primary challenge. However, she has taken aim at Murphy, releasing an online ad accusing him of not understanding the president’s health care overhaul legislation.

But she is taking a softer approach on television. Her two new ads, reviewed Tuesday by The Associated Press, feature two women touting McMahon’s tax cut plan.
