Burlington Man Charged In Shooting Death Of Bear

A Burlington man faces charges after the body of a black bear was found near his home.  The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection says wildlife officers were called to 4 Cobblestone Road about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, when the resident of the home called police about hearing gunshots,  then seeing the bear come into the yard and drop to the ground.

Environmental Conservation Police responding to the scene found a dead male, weighing about 460 pounds.  It had been shot.

Their investigation led to the arrest of a neighbor, 42-year-old Cory Maitz, of 6 Cobblestone Road,  who told police he saw the bear enter his garage, then go into his back yard.  Police charged him with illegally killing a black bear and criminal possession of a pistol.  He is due in court next month.
