Private Security Guards Plan Strike At State Agencies

By SUSAN HAIGH, Associated Press

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Private security guards who work at several state agencies based in Hartford are going on strike.

Kurt Westby is district supervisor for the union 32 BJ which represents the workers. He told The Associated Press Thursday that about 40 guards plan to walk off the job on May 10.

The guards work for SOS Security Inc. at buildings housing state agencies including the Departments of Public Works and the Office of Policy and Management. A man who answered the phone at SOS’s New Jersey headquarters said the company had no comment.

The guards accused SOS of using intimidation tactics against them as they’ve tried to unionize. They say SOS has failed to make pension contributions and they cannot afford health insurance due to their low wages.
