UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) _ Connecticut Sun center Tina Charles’ charity work for Africa began when she saw a “cool” T-shirt on actress Jennifer Aniston, and reached a zenith this week when the final coats of paint were put on a school the basketball star donated to children in Mali.
Charles gave $32,000 to build the school through a partnership with the Stanford-based based charity buildOn and Los Angeles-based OmniPeace, the fashion brand promoted by Aniston, which donates funds to African relief.
Charles, who has never been to Africa, says she chose Mali by sticking her finger on a map of Africa.
BuildOn spokeswoman Carrie Pena says the school will provide an education for about 150 children in a rural and impoverished area of southern Mali, which had been using two mud huts as classrooms.
