Titanic Exhibit Opens At Mystic Aquarium

MYSTIC, Conn. (AP) _ Mystic Aquarium is opening an exhibit on the Titanic in advance of the 100th anniversary of the ocean liner’s tragic sinking in the North Atlantic.

The permanent exhibit titled “Titanic– 12,450 Feet Below” is opening Thursday. On display are replicas of portions of the ship, a cold-to-the-touch sculpture of the iceberg it struck in April 1912 and a huge re-creation of its sunken hull. Interactive exhibits and large murals also help show the story.

Explorer Robert Ballard found the Titanic wreckage in 1985 and designed the exhibit with Tim Delaney, who was an

“Imagineer” for Walt Disney for three decades. Ballard also leads the Sea Research Foundation’s Institute for Exploration, which is based at the aquarium.

Ballard was on hand for a public preview of the exhibit on Wednesday.
