HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ A spokeswoman for Sen. Joseph Lieberman says his Hartford office has alerted U.S. Capitol police about a suspicious piece of mail.

Spokeswoman Whitney Phillips says Capitol police issued a warning about the possibility of suspicious packages sent to senators’ home offices, and the letter has some of the same characteristics. She said the office has not evacuated and is waiting for further guidance from law enforcement authorities.

She said Lieberman was out at an event when the letter arrived Thursday.

The FBI and the Senate’s top law enforcement officer said Wednesday that some congressional offices outside Washington and media organizations have received threatening letters containing a suspicious powdery substance that was tested and proved to be harmless.

Phillips said the Hartford letter was postmarked Portland, Ore., like the others.
