WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) _ Waterbury Hospital is laying off 75 employees to save nearly $4.5 million.
WVIT-TV and The Hartford Courant report that the job cuts will affect about 5 percent of the hospital’s work force of 1,700. The cuts include 22 management jobs, educators and clerical and support staff.
Darlene Stromstad, president and chief executive, blamed declining government reimbursements, rising costs and the weak economy.
She says nearly 70 percent of the hospital’s patients are covered by a governmental payer that does not negotiate payment.
Waterbury Hospital announced last year it agreed to a joint venture with Saint Mary’s Hospital and LHP Hospital Group to merge and build a replacement hospital in Waterbury.
