LEDYARD, Conn. (AP) _ A Connecticut mayor is commending a Navy sailor for coming to the aid of two people injured in a car accident.

Chief Culinary Specialist Daniel Spencer was driving home from the Naval Submarine Base New London last month when he witnessed a motor-vehicle accident that left one car on fire. Spencer pulled his car over and helped the drivers of both cars to safety.

Ledyard Mayor John Rodolico will present Spencer with a proclamation for bravery at a Friday ceremony at the Navy base. The ceremony will be attended by firefighters from the Gales Ferry Fire Company and the submarine base who responded to the crash.

Spencer’s crew mates from the USS Springfield are also expected at the ceremony.
