MANCHESTER, Conn. (AP) _ A Connecticut doctor has made his first court appearance on charges he raped a patient at his East Hartford medical clinic.
Fifty-two-year-old Edwin Njoku was arraigned Wednesday in Manchester Superior Court on charges including first-degree sexual assault, fourth-degree sexual assault, unlawful restraint and bribing a witness. Several supporters of the doctor attended the hearing.
A judge continued Njoku’s bail at $825,000. His lawyer, William Gerace, calls that amount “outrageous” and says police made a spectacle of Njoku’s arrest Tuesday.
The charges came after a woman said Njoku raped her in an examining room at the Christus Medical Group in October and later tried to get her to drop the complaint.
Police say they are investigating claims from others since his arrest that Njoku also assaulted them. Gerace questions the allegations against his client.
