Doctor Charged With Assault Of Patient; Other Possible Victims Sought

An East Hartford doctor faces charges that he raped a patient, and then tried to bribe her to retract her complaint. Police say 52-year-old Dr. Edwin Njoku faces first-degree sexual assault and other charges in connection with an October attack in an examination room at his Burnside Avenue office.

Lieutenant Curt Stoldt says an inappropriate level of contact escalated to sexual assault, with a “certain level of force” used to prevent the woman from resisting.  She went to Hartford Hospital for treatment immediately after the assault.

Stoldt says  police believe there could be more victims, and urge them to come forward.  He said by late afternoon,  as word of the arrest got out and calls began pouring in.  Police asked that callers leave callback numbers with minimal information, and promised to call back for details.

A search of State Health Department records shows no license actions or pending charges against the doctor.
