GROTON, Conn. (AP) _ A newly commissioned attack submarine has arrived at its new homeport in Groton.
Naval Submarine Base New London says the USS California arrived last Friday and is scheduled for further tests and training of the crew.
The nuclear-powered submarine is commanded by Navy Cmdr. Dana Nelson, a native of Clinton, Conn., who leads a crew of about 134 officers and enlisted personnel.
Construction on the vessel began in February 2006 and it officially joined the U.S. fleet at a commissioning ceremony in October at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia.
The California is the eighth Virginia-class sub to join the fleet. They have capabilities that allow them to perform better in shallow water than other subs and are designed to help provide better support for special forces
