Two Dead in New Year’s Morning Crash

WESTPORT, Mass. (AP) _ Two Rhode Island residents are dead and two others from Connecticut are injured after a car they were riding in rolled down a steep embankment and through thick overgrowth and trees in the early hours of the new year on I-95 North in Westport.

The Hartford Courant identified the dead as 46-year-old Terrance Bernard and 25-year-old Savannah Wakely of Woonsocket, who were passengers. The injured are the 32-year-old driver, Jamain Jerry Allen, and 27-year-old Jennifer Shaver, all of Bridgeport.

The Westport Fire Department says state troopers received several 911 calls at about 3 a.m. Sunday reporting a car over the embankment between exits 18 and 19 in Westport.

Firefighters from Westport and Fairfield responded to the scene.

Authorities say the two victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are still investigating and could not immediately comment.
