The Women’s Beat with Bob Joyce
The Exam after Exams – 10p CT Dec 17…Greeting from the land of Dr Pepper ! Tomorrow, all the hoopla of a 1v2 game comes to life as the 2nd ranked Huskies visit #1 Baylor. But both Coaches, Geno Auriemma and Kim Mulkey are using this as a “gauge” game to see where they stand. Afterall, a win won’t guarantee the victor a National Championship in April will it ? Let’s hope it’s a heck of a game none the less. The Women’s Game needs one for sure.
After going over the numbers, this Baylor team reminds me of the 2008-09 Huskies. Two dominant, if not the best players at their positions in Center Brittany Griner and PG Odyssey Sims, a third double figure scorer in Brooklyn Pope and two more close in “Nae-Nae” Hayden and Destiny Williams. Meaning they have plenty of options. Geno mentioned this Friday saying if both teams play their “A Game” , it’ll be hard for UConn to win…I concur..The Huskies have to shoot the ball well, make some threes and keep the turnovers down just to have a shot. And they can’t get into a shootout with the Bears…The lower the score, the better UConn’s chances.
Of course the main attraction is the Griner/ Stephanie Dolson matchup. Steph no so hot-so at Seton Hall and she knows it. Geno got on her pretty good after her third foul and she never played again. Trust me, Dolson wants to make amends for that outing. If she plays the way she did against Stanford and Texas A&M, the chances improve. One thing I know for sure, the Huskies will bring the Lunch Pail and Hard Hats…but will it be enough ?
Joe & Wayne kickoff the UConn DH at 12:30 with the Men v Holy Cross at the XL (and no Mr LaVigne, Ron Perry isn’t playing ..lol) Then it’s our pregame at 8pm…Hope you join us from Waco ! I’ll check in from Charleston with a postscript on this one
